Dr. Mark A. Silver has officially become a member of Nuclear Energy Center, School of Radiation Medicine and Protection as the first foreign full-time professor. He earned his B.S. from department of chemistry and biochemistry, University of Toledo in 2013 and then became a Ph.D. student of Florida State University. Under the supervision of Thomas E. Albrecht-Schmitt, a famous expert in radiochemistry, Mark made his effort to the investigation of post-plutonium elements, i.e. Americium(Am), Curium(Cm), Berkelium(Bk), Californium(Cf) and so on, which are highly radiotoxic and hard to deal with. In 2016, Mark had successfully defended his thesis and was conferred a Doctor degree. After that, Mark went to Oak Ridge National Laboratory to go on his investigation about actinide borate. During that time, he aimed at studying the speciation of actinide borate compounds under different pH values and ion strength values using 11B-NMR spectroscopy to evaluate the coordination behavior of actinide ions to borate in the repository field under certain geological conditions.
Mark Silver has published more than 10 research papers on top journals and he is the first author in five among those papers, including Science, J. Am. Chem. Soc., Coor. Chem. Rev., Nat. Commun. and Inorg. Chem.. The one published on Science has captured extensive attention from many American media and journals accompanied with a spate of reports. Meanwhile, this Science paper is also one of the few Science papers on radiochemistry. Besides, Mark was also invited as a lecturer in many international conferences on radiochemistry to share his inspiring and original works in radiochemistry. Moreover, he’s awarded Hoffman Scholarship of Florida State University in 2013 and Carl**ad Field Office Scholarship for Graduates in 2015.
Since we are building an international college, the advent of Dr. Mark A. Silver makes this aim step further, which manifest the increasing international impacts of our college. He said, for the internationalization of constitution of our college, he’ll devote himself to enhance the international cooperation of our college, including recruit oversea teaching staff, postdocs and graduates. On the other hand, he’ll attempt at helping the native student to broaden their horizons to make them more international. Dean Prof. Zhifang Chai, the academic member of Chinese Academy of Science, Prof. Jianping Cao, the secretary of the Party committee, Prof. Yujie Xu, associate dean and all members of Nuclear Energy Center has extended the warmest welcome to Dr. Mark Silver and held a barbecue party for him aside Dushu Lake.
