Abstrat: Heart valves ensure auni-direction flow of the blood and are an important component of thecardiovascular system. Their mechanical state, e.g., stresses, are closelyrelated to valve-related disease progression. Currently available methodscharacterize the valve leaflets' mechanical properties from ex-vivo testing, which puts the tissue in a non-native environment. In this talk, I will gothrough the various components we are working on to develop a method that willallow us to characterize the mechanical properties from in-vivo imaging. Thiswill facilitate improving our knowledge of the valve mechanics in their nativeenvironment, diagnosis of various diseases, and evaluation of post-surgeryperformance.

Bio: Dr. Ankush Aggarwal is aNational Research Network Research Fellow at Zienkiewicz Centre forComputational Engineering, within Swansea University. He obtained his PhD inmechanical engineering from University of California, Los Angeles in 2012.After working as a postdoctoral researcher with Prof. Michael Sacks at theUniversity of Texas at Austin for three years, he joined Swansea University forhis first academic position. His research interests are broadly at the interfaceof mechanics and biology, using advanced computational techniques such asmulti-scale methods.
