Nanomedicine is a rapidlyemerging interdisciplinary area with many challenges, especially in the area ofscientific communication. Effective verbal and written scientific communicationis the basis of any advancement in technology, and it has even more importancefor a field, which is being developed internationally.
Nowadays, we are generatingknowledge faster than ever before. The information revolution and computers arechanging the way scientific information is shared and evaluated. Sciencepublishing is also undergoing dynamic changes from printing to online, and newbusiness models, like open access and hybrid models are on the rise. Theessential question is the same for authors and publishers: is it possible to determinethe value of research (manuscript or publication) before and after making itpublic, and if the answer is yes, what are the best, objective methods to dothat?
Getting published is crucial foracademicians, researchers, and students. Hiring decisions are often made on thebasis of publications therefore it is necessary to understand the mechanism,and find the best publication forum formaximum exposure.
In this talk, the speaker will explainhow publishing works today, what is the difference between the fundamentalbusiness models, and will summarize major changes in science publications. Hewill describe the use and limits of citation based metrics and ranking, andexplain current scientific methods to determine ranking of journals andmagazines. You will learn how to select your target audience, and which tools canbe used to evaluate publication activities of journals, individuals,institutions, and countries. Dr. Baloghwill introduce the Nanomedicine NBM journal, its requirements, and procedures,and will compare it to leading nanomedicine journals. A guide how to getpublished in Nanomedicine NBM will also be presented with a question-and-answeropportunity.
Lajos Balogh, PhD简介：
Dr.Lajos (Lou) Balogh is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Nanomedicine: Nanotechnology, Biology and Medicine (Elsevier) www.nanomedjournal.com, (2013 Impact Factor=5.98,5-year IF=7.01).
Dr. Balogh is Adjunct Professor ofPharmaceutical Sciences at Northeastern University, Boston, MA, and Professorof the Chinese Academy of Sciences for Distinguished International Scientists.He authored or coauthored over 150 scientific publications (with over 5000 citations),six book chapters, delivered more than 200 invited presentations been andawarded 12 patents in various disciplines including chemistry, chemicaltechnology, nanotechnology and nanomedicine.
Dr. Balogh received his Ph.D. from theKossuth L. University in Hungary in Chemical Technology and later was invitedto the University of Massachusetts Lowell as a Visiting Professor in 1991. Hethen worked at the Michigan Molecular Institute, Midland, MI as a seniorscientist, and had faculty appointments (Department of Internal Medicine,Department of Biomedical Engineering and Macromolecular Science andEngineering) at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI. Before starting hisown consulting business, he was the Co-Director of the NanoBiotechnology Centerand Director of Nanotechnology Research in the Department of Radiation Medicineat the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, NY, and at the University atBuffalo, SUNY.
He is Owner and Chief Scientific Advisor (baloghl@prodigy.net) at the business AA Nanomedicine& Nanotechnology Consultants, North Andover, MA that provides scientificevaluation, feasibility studies, and concept assessments for nanomedicinerelated research applications, R&D projects, business plans andinvestments, as well as expert evaluation and technology due diligence forprivate companies, government agencies (NIH, NSF, DoD, USEPA, Chinese Academyof Sciences, etc.) and private investors in nanomedicine, nanobiotechnology,and nanotechnology since 2000.
Lou is member of the Nanobusiness Alliance,USA, and he serves on numerous USA, European, and International expertcommittees including the Steering Committee of the American National StandardInstitute Nanotechnology Panel and the US Technical Advisory Committee to theInternational Standard Organization on Nanotechnology (TC-229).
